Themes and Genre

There are several Genres of film that our group feel we can tackle well in our short film, which will achieve the general narrative structure of perceived short film, such as romantic comedy and social realist films which have twists within them to make them more powerful and iconic. Being able to achieve something of this status in a 5 minute clip will be an accomplishment for us.

Ideas for genre that we have been playing around with are Romantic comedy and Drama with social realist elements. Themes that we linked to romantic comedy are Teen romance and causality. An idea for Teen romance was a generally cheesy one about a kid on his first day at a new college sits down in class to see this girl across the room who he immediately obtains a crush on. He begins to visualise their life together and how he plans to talk to her at the end of the lesson. The twist is that she already has a boyfriend and so he is left there alone. He would then leave the room to see another girl who he gets a crush on and the same process happens again and the film would end there.

Another idea for romantic comedy involving the theme of causality is one where a character has the choice to do something and when the choice is made his life splits up on screen, creating a split screen of what would happen if he made the choice and if he didn't. One ending would be that he ends up sad and alone and one would see him with the girl of his dreams. This has been done before and so if used we would need to make the film original somehow to keep the themes and genre fresh.

A darker idea involving social realism was of a boy that constantly gets mocked in school, with a visual expression to accompany his pain and how it impacts him at home. Obviously this would be a more educational short film of the effects of Bullying within any student age range generally. To achieve this affect we would have a representation of the kid being bullied in school but no affection upon his character bubbling on the surface, until it split-screens to show him going crazy at home without dialogue to express it, possibly in slow motion to show the emotional damage its had on him, with powerful music to accompany it. A score similar to "Adagio for strings" used in the movie platoon gave much inspiration for the type of musci we need for the effect that would be had on the character.
