Themes for the Short Film

For the short film, the fact that it has to feature British themes in there so that it can be related to the culture and society that we live in today, presents a large variety of possible themes or genre that we could use when creating the short film.

Multi-Cultural Society

Britain is known strongly for its strong ethnic and multi-cultural society where a large number of people  from different societies, and different ethnicity's are able to come together and live peacefully in a certain way. In terms of for our short film, if we were to go down this path we could potentially deal with some controversial issues which short films are known to do often, such as Racism or the problem of having different groups together. However, as they are quite controversial issues they would have to be performed well in order to not create potential problems that might affect someone.

Social Realism

This is another key area that our group can potentially use when creating our short film and is one of the themes that is used frequently in terms of British Identity. By looking at the film Cherries, which in a way can be considered a social realist film and an educational film, it tackles the boys getting the notice that they have to go fight for their country. It presents the controversial issue which a lot of people that age might be facing as in whether they want to go to war or not and what would happen if Britain did have to go to war. Whilst not being as extreme our short film could also go on to produce a social realist film which could tackle some of the issues that some teenagers in Britain could go through such as rape or abortion.

Current events/Past events in Britain

This can potentially be an interesting area to go onto when creating the short film where a vast majority of interesting events can be used here. For example, our group could go and create a short film about the riots and the affects that it had on people at the time whilst showing snippets of past news reports of it. However, there can be the potential issue of copyright here. Additionally, there could also potentially be something about Crime where constant tv shows such as The Bill have proven to be popular when people have watched them and have usually been on the air for a long period of time.
